What recruiters actually think about gaps
Recruiters are not hunting for gaps; they are checking that the timeline adds up. An unexplained hole invites a guess, and guesses are rarely generous. A short, factual line that says what the time was and what you did with it removes the question entirely — and lets the rest of the CV do its job.
Six ways to present a gap honestly
Decide whether it is a gap at all
Under three months between roles is normal and needs no comment. Write dates as month and year rather than exact days, and many short breaks disappear on their own.
Name it in one line, in the timeline
Put the period where it falls in your work history: "Career break — caring for a family member, 2023–2024." Treat it like any other entry so the chronology stays continuous.
Say what you did, not why you are sorry
Study, freelance work, volunteering, a course, a relocation: state it plainly. You owe the reader a fact, not an apology — and you do not owe medical or family detail.
Show what stayed current
If you kept skills up — certifications, side projects, part-time or contract work — list them under the gap or in your skills section. That answers the question a recruiter is really asking.
Lead with a summary that frames it
A short professional profile at the top reminds the reader what you are and what you offer before they reach the dates. It sets the frame the gap is read in.
Prepare the same story for the interview
Whatever the CV says, the interview will ask. One calm, consistent version — what happened, what you did, why you are ready now — is all it takes.
What not to do
- Stretching dates to hide the gap — a reference check will find it, and then the gap is the smaller problem.
- Switching to a skills-only CV that hides every date; recruiters read that as a gap they have to hunt for.
- Writing a paragraph of explanation where one line will do.
