What an ATS actually does
An applicant tracking system parses your CV into fields — contact details, work history, skills — and stores them as searchable text. Recruiters then filter that pool by keywords. If the parser cannot read a section, that experience effectively does not exist for the search. Making your CV ATS-friendly is not about tricking the software; it is about formatting so the parser reads everything you wrote.
Eight rules for an ATS-friendly CV
Use a single-column layout
Multi-column and sidebar designs are often read out of order or scrambled. A clean single column parses top to bottom, in the sequence you intended.
Keep text as text, not images
Logos, icons, and a CV saved as a picture are invisible to a parser. Every word that matters must be real, selectable text.
Use standard section headings
"Work Experience," "Education," "Skills" — plain, expected headings help the ATS map your content to the right fields. Skip the clever labels.
Match keywords from the job description
The system ranks on the terms recruiters search for. Use the exact skills and job titles the posting names, wherever they honestly describe you.
Spell out acronyms at least once
Write "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" so you match both the acronym and the full term a recruiter might type.
Export a common, parseable file
A text-based PDF parses reliably (or .docx when the employer asks). Avoid unusual fonts and heavy graphics that can garble the extraction.
Keep dates and titles consistent
A clear "Job title — Company — Month Year to Month Year" line lets the parser build an accurate work history it can sort and search.
Never hide keywords
White-on-white text, microscopic fonts, and off-screen keyword lists get flagged and rejected. Earn the match honestly instead.
Common myths
- "An ATS rejects every PDF" — false. A clean text-based PDF parses fine; image-only PDFs are the real problem, along with heavy graphics or unusual fonts.
- "Fancy templates score higher" — the opposite is true; heavy design confuses the parser.
- "More keywords always win" — stuffing gets you filtered out. Relevance wins.
